Recently, theNational Natural Science Foundation of China officially announced theestablishment of basic research projects for young students (undergraduates) in2024. The project applied by Ruobin Sun (2025 Doctorate student), undergraduatestudent of Prof. Zhuo Xiong’s Research Group (BRE team) of the Bio-ManufacturingCenter of the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Tsinghua University, wonthe funding approval (a total of 2 projects submitted by the Department ofMechanical Engineering of Tsinghua University in 2024 were approved). ProfessorZhuo Xiong and Assistant Researcher Yongcong Fang, from BiomanufacturingCenter, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Tsinghua University, are theproject supervisors.

This projectfocuses on the problem that the cardiac pump tube constructed by the currentresearch is difficult to achieve the auxiliary function of efficient pumpingblood, aiming to propose an accurate forming method of bionic spiral structure,build a biological cardiac pump tube structure with the function of pumpingblood, provide a new idea for the construction of complex tissues and organs,and is expected to expand the transformation application of artificial hearttissue in the treatment of heart diseases.

2024 is thesecond year of the pilot implementation of the National Natural ScienceFoundation of China (NSFC) Youth Students Basic Research Project(undergraduate) by the NSFC. Based on the existing talent support system, theNSFC has established the Youth Students Basic Research Project, aiming toadvance the funding opportunities, identify talents at an early stage, fosterscientific literacy, stimulate innovative research, and provide "freshwater from the source" to build a high-quality talent pool for basicresearch.
